Overall a great experience and I do not regret playing this game. Pewdiepie as 'weabitch'during his Let's Play of Hatoful Boyfriend. The writing was fantastic and kept me on my toes. the player a human named Hiyoko, meaning 'chick' starts college at St. The ridiculousness of the fact that the game started out as an otome game where you romanced birds left my mind. I was crying at the end when Ryouta and Hiyoko were talking to each other on the black screen. I was so invested that I played through the entire thing in one go. I remember the one off-hand comment Hiyoko made about Ryouta always being sicker after going to the infirmary. The foreshadowing went crazy in this game. I loved the mystery and the way the story unfolded so that you could guess what was going on before it was stated (such as Anghel being the bloody bird) but also be thrown completely off guard (such as Hiyoko being Labour 9). Needless to say, there was NOTHING that could have prepared me for the insane story that was the BBL route. The word otome literally means girl and the genre is best known for romance simulations presumably targeted at young women. I already thought Shuu's route was insane enough. Hatoful Boyfriend is a Japanese otome game. I played the routes in order of Ryouta -> Sakuya -> Okosan -> Kazuaki -> Azami -> Nageki -> Shuu -> Yuuya -> Anghel -> BBL. I believe that she made the game much more impactful with her clearly defined character than if she were a blank self-insert. To get Azami's ending, Hiyoko has to accept a job at Torimi Cafe. I absolutely loved her wacky comments about being a hunter-gatherer. A character Hiyoko befriends features in a couple of Hatoful Boyfriend's non-LI endings. I loved when Hiyoko got to team up with her and create a (lawful) biker gang because that was freaking EPIC! Her theme song is also such a bop. Before Nageki's route, I had played Ryouta, Sakuya and San's I was expecting some comedic stuff again. I kept having to reset my game because of that. I was also frustrated about the lack of a "skip all except for read dialogue" because I kept skipping over new parts I didn't know would appear in routes. It took a while to get used to the bird sprites, but they've grown on me now. I'm so glad I gave this game a second try because hoo boy.
I got it a year and a half ago, tried playing it once, and couldn't get into it.
